The brainchild of football enthusiast and Electronic Arts founder Trip Hawkins, the genre-defining title almost was never made. Hardware limitations at the time limited the original game prototype to seven-on-seven play, but John Madden requested "real" 11-on-11 sports before they was willing to grant the use of his name.

Madden was looking for a game coaches as well as football analysts could use, not a toy. Over three years after its creationduring a period when most games took half that time to create -- Madden along with others associated with the project hoped that it would be pulled.

"All my memories are of hurt," game producer Joe Ybarra declared about the game's development. Ybarra has left the Madden project EA soon after it was launched and was reported to not see football for a whole year.
